Workout Plans for Gym Members: Templates, Progression and Plans That Get Followed

How gyms should create member workout plans: beginner templates, progression rules, reusing plans at scale, guided sessions in an app, and reviewing progress.

A member who knows exactly what to do when they walk in is far more likely to come back tomorrow. Workout plans are a retention tool as much as a training tool - and they only work if they are simple, progressive and in the member’s hand when they need them.

Principles that matter more than exercise choice

  1. Consistency beats complexity. A plan a member completes three times a week beats a perfect plan they abandon.
  2. Progression is the point. Every plan needs a rule for getting harder - more weight, more reps, more sets.
  3. Fit the schedule. A plan for five days a week is wrong for a member who can come three.
  4. Clarity in the moment. The member must know the exercise, the sets, the reps and the rest without asking.

Beginner template (full body, 3 days a week)

Movement patternExampleSets x reps
SquatGoblet squat or leg press3 x 10
HingeRomanian deadlift (dumbbell)3 x 10
PushDumbbell bench press3 x 10
PullLat pulldown or seated row3 x 10

Progression rule: when the member completes all sets at the top of the rep range with good form, increase the weight slightly next session.

Delivering plans at scale

A gym with 400 members cannot write 400 plans from scratch. Use templates by goal and level - beginner fat loss, beginner strength, intermediate hypertrophy - assign them broadly, and personalise for PT clients and members with injuries.

Make the plan usable on the floor

  • Demonstrations: an animation of the movement beats a written description.
  • Muscles and equipment: so members can find a substitute when a machine is busy.
  • Rest timers: so sessions keep a sensible pace.
  • Session-by-session guidance: one exercise at a time, not a wall of text.

Review and adjust

Check in every four to eight weeks: has the member progressed, are they attending, has their goal changed? Use progress photos and habit tracking rather than the scale alone - see tracking member progress.

Safety notes

Screen new members for injuries and medical conditions, teach technique before load, and refer members with pain or medical issues to an appropriate professional.

How Torzil delivers workout plans

Torzil’s workout builder uses a library of 1,300+ animated exercises with instructions, muscles, equipment and video tutorial links. Trainers build plans once and assign them; members follow them in the app’s workout runner with rest timers, alongside habit goals, streaks and progress photos. The same library is available in Guest Mode for prospects. See gym workout management and pair plans with diet plans for members.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good workout plan for gym beginners?

Two or three full-body sessions a week built on a handful of basic movements - a squat or leg press, a hinge, a push, a pull and a carry or core exercise - with moderate sets and reps and a simple rule for adding weight or reps over time.

How often should a member's workout plan change?

Less often than most people think. Keep the core plan for four to eight weeks and progress the load or reps; change exercises when progress stalls or the member's goal changes.

Can a gym use the same workout plan for many members?

Yes. Templates for common goals and levels, assigned to many members and adjusted for individuals where needed, are how gyms deliver plans at scale without every trainer writing from scratch.

Why do members stop following workout plans?

Usually because the plan is too long, unclear in the gym, or not visible when they need it. A plan on the member's phone with demonstrations and rest timers is far more likely to be followed than a paper sheet.
