Why most Indian gyms use biometrics
Biometric attendance became standard in Indian gyms for practical reasons: members cannot share a fingerprint the way they share a card, nobody forgets their face at home, and a device at the door enforces the membership rules without staff having to confront anyone. The problem was never the device. It was that the device usually ran its own software, disconnected from billing, so an expired member’s fingerprint still opened the door.
Torzil connects the device to the membership.
Supported devices
| Device family | Typical use in gyms | Torzil |
|---|---|---|
| ZKTeco | The most widely deployed range, from basic fingerprint readers to face terminals | Fingerprint and face sync |
| eSSL | Very common in India, widely available locally | Fingerprint and face sync |
| BioMax | Frequent in mid-market installations | Fingerprint and face sync |
Bring your model number to the demo. Device integration is model-specific work, and any vendor that says “works with all biometric devices” without naming them should be asked to prove it.
What the integration does
- Real-time sync - each check-in appears on the member’s profile, the dashboard check-in feed and attendance reports.
- Template management - biometric templates for members and staff are managed from Torzil rather than the device’s own menu.
- Expired-membership auto-block - a lapsed plan stops opening the door; renewal restores access.
- Unknown visitor logs - unrecognised scans are recorded, not ignored.
- Staff attendance - the same device records staff, feeding payroll.
- Branch awareness - devices belong to a branch, so attendance is reported per location in multi-branch setups.
Fingerprint or face?
Fingerprint readers are cheaper and reliable, but slow down with sweaty or wet hands - which, at a gym exit, is most hands. Face recognition is faster at peak hours and contactless, but costs more and is sensitive to lighting. Many gyms put face recognition at the main entrance and fingerprint elsewhere. Rolling out biometrics without a queue
- Confirm your device model is supported.
- Import members into Torzil (free as part of migration).
- Enrol members in waves as they arrive, starting with the most regular attenders.
- Keep QR check-in on as a fallback during enrolment.
- Switch on expired-membership blocking once enrolment is complete.
When the door becomes the renewal conversation
The commercial value of biometric blocking is easy to underestimate. Without it, a lapsed member keeps training for weeks while the desk means to “have a word”. With it, the device politely sends them to the desk on the first day, where a payment link or UPI renewal takes a minute. At Rs 1,500 a month for Torzil, recovering one or two lapsed monthly renewals covers the software’s cost.
What Torzil does that device software alone cannot
Torzil names its supported devices - ZKTeco, eSSL and BioMax - and goes beyond syncing punches: template management, expired-member auto-block, unknown-visitor logs, staff attendance for payroll and branch-level reporting. Compare platforms in best gym attendance software.
