Why renewals are the leakiest part of a gym
Every gym runs on renewals, and every manual renewal is a decision the member has to make again. Most do not decide to leave; they just do not get round to paying. The reminder arrives on a busy day, the desk is closed when they remember, and two weeks later they have drifted. The industry’s retention numbers - roughly half of new members gone within six months - are partly a story about payment friction.
Recurring payments flip the default. Instead of the member choosing to renew every month, the renewal happens unless they choose to stop.
How recurring payments work in Torzil
- The member chooses a monthly (or other recurring) plan in the app or at the desk.
- They authorise a recurring payment once - for example a UPI AutoPay mandate approved in their UPI app - through your Razorpay account.
- On each due date the renewal is collected automatically.
- Torzil generates the invoice with GST, records the payment, extends the membership and keeps access active.
- If the debit fails, the failure is tracked and the member can be sent a WhatsApp message with a payment link.
What good recurring billing has to handle
| Situation | What should happen | Torzil |
|---|---|---|
| Successful debit | Invoice, receipt, membership extended | Automatic |
| Failed debit | Visible to staff, member contacted | Failed payments tracked; WhatsApp/SMS follow-up with a payment link |
| Member pauses | Billing should not continue for paused time | Pause approvals with days credited back |
| Plan upgrade | New amount from the next cycle | Upgrade recorded on the membership |
| Member cancels mandate | Renewal falls back to manual | Member can still renew in-app or by link |
| GST | Every recurring invoice taxed correctly | Built-in GST with rate history |
Mandates and member trust
A recurring payment only works if the member is comfortable authorising it. Two things help. First, the mandate is visible and manageable in the member’s own UPI or banking app, and under RBI’s e-mandate framework the customer is notified before each debit. Second, be transparent: tell members the amount, the date and how to stop. The recurring gym membership payments guide has scripts and rollout advice.
Recurring payments and retention
Automatic renewals remove the “forgot to pay” exit, but they do not replace engagement. A member who has stopped attending will eventually cancel the mandate. Pair recurring payments with low-attendance alerts and retention workflows so you notice disengagement before the cancellation, not after.
Who should use recurring payments
- Gyms selling monthly memberships, where renewal friction is highest.
- Studios with monthly unlimited or monthly credit plans.
- Personal training businesses billing monthly packages.
- Multi-branch operators that want predictable, branch-level recurring revenue.
Recurring collection connected to everything around it
Torzil connects recurring collection to everything around it - GST invoicing, membership extension, access control, pause handling, failed-payment tracking and WhatsApp follow-up - through your own Razorpay account, with UPI AutoPay for Indian members. Compare platforms in best gym payment software.
